Comparative Essay

Though, both “Rock n’ Roll Band” and “Have a cigar” depicts a rock bands uprising. While song one incorporates an energetic, fun tone in order to portray his excitement of starting up a new band, and becoming famous, “Have a cigar” utilizes a more pessimistic tone toward the mocking of their former member of their band, explaining that they can still successfully continue on with their band.

Juicy-Biggie Smalls

Shifting from “negative” to “positive” in the song “Juicy”, Biggie Smalls uses a specific rhyme scheme, obvious allusions and slang in order to tell his story of how he went from being extremely poor to rich just from doing what he loves the most; rapping.

In the song “Juicy” Biggie Smalls utilizes a specific rhyme scheme in order to portray his story of becoming a famous rapper. However, it mainly serves to maintain a consistent ‘flow’ in which will eventually conclude a specific purpose; just like the flow of a river will eventually meet its end. As Biggie once wrote, “Rapping duke daha daha, you never thought hip hop would take it this far”. This is a flowing way to introduce the struggle in ones life,

Obvious allusions are also used in the song “Juicy” in order to prove that he has become something instead of becoming a loser who went nowhere in life. In the line “Yeah, this album is dedicated to all the teachers that told me I'd never amount to nothin'.” he alludes to the teacher at them saying he'd never go anywhere in life, but he did what he dreamed of in becoming a famous rapper.

Lastly, Smalls uses slang in the song “ Juicy”. The use of slang is a helpful tool to use to keep a song flowing, and is almost a necessity in rap songs. It is a way to get a message across but in a catchy, and entertaining manner. An example of catchy slang that also portrays the over all message of how he went from nothing to something is when he says “Born sinner, the opposite of a winner remember when I used to eat sardines for dinner.” This gets his message away, without saying it in a boring way.

The use of specific rhyme scheme, obvious allusions, and slang is Small's way of telling his story of how he went from being extremely poor to rich just from doing what he loves the most, rapping.

Little Green by Joni Mitchell

        In the song, “Little Green”, Joni Mitchell utilizes realistic symbolism, personification towards the child, and characterization, in order to show the struggle in giving up ones new born child for adoption and explains how she suffers through the process in doing this.

          In this song, Joni Mitchell uses realistic symbolism in order to give deeper meaning of words used, to convey the beauty and hardships in giving ones baby up for adoption.  Joni compares “Little Green” to the “Northern lights” this is symbolic to this song because it symbolizes the beauty of this new born child, “Little Green”.  Mitchell tells Little Green, “There’ll be icicles and birthday clothes,” communicating to her daughter that her life will be filled with special memories.  She immediately follows this line with a message telling “Little Green” that life will not only be filled with happy memories, but also sorrowful memories.  She is getting her new born baby prepared for life.

           Enhanced personification was also used in Joni Mitchells song, “Little green” an example of this would be when Mitchell points out the spring coming to a start. “The spring is born”, this would be an example of personification because realistically a season isn’t “born”, it is given this human life characteristic to add deeper and a better flow to the phrases used.  Mitchell uses enhanced personification in this song, “Little Green” as a way to express her feelings and towards her new born baby, and the way she feels is symbolic to one of a new born, beautiful baby.

           Characterization is another example to a poetic device in which Joni Mitchell utilizes in her song “Little Green”.  Characterization towards “Little Green” is a poetic device similar to that of personification. Comparing a person, which in this case would be either Joni’s new baby, “Little Green” or the father who had left Joni and her baby at birth? An example of characterization would be when Joni describes the personality traits of “Little Green’s” father.  

          Joni Mitchell in the song “Little Green” utilizes realistic symbolism, enhanced personification, and characterization to convey the hardship and struggles of her past when we was a young adult in giving her new born baby girl up for adoption.  Symbolism adds deeper meaning in order to compare things outside of the context to something being described. Also personification gives something other than a human figure, human characteristics. Using personification also gives much deeper meaning to words being given. Lastly characterization portrays attitude of one, by using realistic and or non realistic symbolism. Joni Mitchell uses all of these devices in order to make her song “ Little Green” that much better.
